Pres aide says Russia should take time with Internet regulation

MOSCOW, Jul 10 (PRIME) -- Russia should not change Internet regulation fast, like in China, the E.U. or the U.S., the president’s newly-appointed special representative for digital development Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday.

“I think that we should take time now and have a close look at the challenges our neighbors and partners face. We see China and the U.S. making very serious decisions to regulate the Internet. A very important law in the E.U. has come in force. Each of these laws changes the rules of the game in the Internet,” Peskov said.

Russia has not made such dramatic steps yet. “We should watch how such serious transformations from the point of view of regulation of data privacy, from the point of view of network neutrality are weathered by our neighbors and partners, and only then should we make conscious decisions,” the special representative said.

About 20 bills is being prepared under the Digital Economy program, and more suggestions will follow by the end of 2018. “They are not of a hardline character, but they produce new opportunities,” Peskov said.
